Today we stood on the highway overpass, along with thousands of others.
We stood there to honor the life and sacrifice of Lance Corporal Jared Schmitz. Jared was one of the thirteen American military members killed by a suicide bomber in the Kabul Airport.
Jared was merely twenty years old. He was a local boy, from nearby Wentzville, Missouri – a neighboring city in the county where we live.
Today Lance Corporal Jared Schmitz went to his final resting place in Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery.
My heart breaks for his family. I am also proud of the community for all the honor, respect and support shown for this young man and his family. I can only hope it is of some, small comfort to his family.
Thank you, Lance Corporal Jerid Schmitz, for your service and your supreme sacrifice for our country. May you rest in peace.
Thank you, Betty, for this touching message and your support of the community and his family. I always hope that some day, we will figure out another way to live with each other. It is indeed heartbreaking every time.

Thank you. The community has really rallied around them, but still, the loss is great.
